To be outstanding successful, it often makes sense not to follow the rules. I watched a video clip at YT about some very successful debut albums of now-famous musicians. They all have one thing in common: their marketing and promotion were new, different from the mainstream, and they reached the target audience. Here are three examples:

 1. The Killers – Hot Fuzz (2004). 173 weeks in UK charts, 7 Mio. albums sold. They had big tours through USA and UK, before a record contract. Usually, you need a record company to finance a tour, but the Killers (Mr. Brightside), financed them with their cash flow.

2. Arctic Monkeys – Whatever the people say I am – I`m not (2006). They issued free demo CDs for their fans before their album was released. 120.000 records sold only on the first day, 3 Mio. until today.

3. Oasis – Definitely Maybe (1994). Their debut in times of Crunch Rock was outstandingly successful because of their marketing in non-musical publications like soccer magazines. Like the Arctic Monkeys, they found a better and cheaper way to connect with their customers and fans. 15 Mio. records sold of the first album until today prove they are right.

You may not be a rockstar or want to become one, but these fresh ideas to market a product did work for many businesses: where are our customers east of mainstream media, and how do we make them fans with less money?

The clip that inspired me is in German language. The music selection is excellent:
